S Bar Bar Review

S BarS Bar, is located between Nakama and The Locker Room in Pittsburgh’s South Side, and is one climbing up the charts towards being one of Pittsburgh’s trendiest bars. A crisp and clean feel make this perfect female hunting ground.

The inside of S Bar boasts deep red walls on one side and plasmas on the other. This look is definitely unusual but in a good way, almost like Elixer and Cupka’s got together for a night of drunken debauchery and out came the best of both worlds. S Bar has an upscale feel but isn’t snooty enough to the point where you can’t stroll in and watch a game.

The natural layout of S Bar is different than most since it is shaped similar to a cul-de-sac with a long and narrow bar and a circular booth serving as the VIP section. Warning make sure you are not wearing any booze induced ogle goggles because the VIP section is small,. With you and the hippo you call your girl there isn’t going to be room for anyone else..

As far as the crowd goes at S Bar, it is pretty all encompassing. There is a good mix of young 20 somethings having a good time but you could easily find yourself in the company of the 40 year old banker whose only goal tonight is to commit a little adultery. Obviously the busy nights for S Bar are Thursday-Saturday but don’t over look Tuesday nights. You never know what can happen when you put Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and Mexican Watermelons (Patron & Watermelon Pucker) in a pot and just let it simmer.

One thing that perplexes me about S Bar is the menu. First off, the food isn’t bad, actually it is quite tasty (and fresh from the Shady Side Market) but c’mon what bar serves Prosciutto & Melon and Hummus as appetizers? Seriously would you repaint the Mona Lisa? Clearly not . . . stick to the basics of fries, nachos, wings, and sandwiches because antipasti displays are for geriatric centers, not bars.

Happy hour at S Bar isn’t bad, but nothing spectacular . . .$1 off beers, $1.50 of mixed drinks, and $2.00 off appetizers (great $2 off honeydew and bacon skewers!).

Overall we definitely recommend checking out S Bar. It’s a good place to stop and have a few drinks but probably not a place to spend an entire night. Just remember to be stay away from the creepy bankers and to eat before you come, unless melon is your type of bar food.
